Do I need any special technical knowledge or experience with video systems in order to use OMNIUS?
None at all. Using OMNIUS is as easy as browsing your favourite website. Just click and view. Even remote manipulation of the surveillance camera(s) and remote searching of your surveillance archive take only a few minutes to master.
What kind of Internet connection do I need?
The service requires a broadband connection (e.g. cable, ADSL with a minimum transmission speed of 128 kbps) with a public IP address.
Do I need to install any software to use the system via my PC?
If you use IP or CCTV camera no software installation is required. The system works based on a remote server, and you can access it via your existing web browser software. If you use webcam, it is necessary to install OMNIUS Lite software on your PC with the webcam connected.
How does the image quality of an IP-video surveillance camera compare with that of a traditional video surveillance camera?
Not only is the high quality image of IP-video comparable or even superior to that of traditional analogue video, IP-video is also superior to traditional video in a range of other quality factors. With traditional video, image quality is lost when using long cables, and the quality of the recorded video deteriorates over time. With IP-video, the images' high quality is the same regardless of the camera's location, and there is no degradation of the digitally recorded image over time.
Where and for how long are recorded IP-video surveillance images stored? Can I keep them for as long as I want? How much does archiving IP-surveillance video cost?
As part of the OMNIUS services, recorded images are generally stored on a service provider's servers. The archive size is approximately 3 days assuming continuous 24 h/day recording from 1 camera. If continuous recording is not used the stored events are certainly much older than 3 days. If the archive storage capacity is reached the latest events are deleted and replaced by the newest ones (cyclic archive). Note: if you use OMNIUS Lite software with your webcam the archive is stored on your PC and the size depends on your local HDD capacity.
How secure is the access to IP-video surveillance images?
High security of access to live and recorded IP-video surveillance is ensured through password protection and other gated IP access measures. Only persons authorized by you will be able to view your IP-video surveillance images. Communication is encrypted (https). Your privacy is completely guaranteed.
Can I really watch the camera or search the archive from any place in the world?
Yes you can. The system is completely independent of your location. Thanks to a solution based on IP protocol, the only thing you need is a web browser and a connection to the Internet or a 3G mobile phone, no matter whether you are at home, in your office, in another branch office, or en route.
Can I operate the camera's pan, tilt and zoom functions remotely using my cell phone?
An intelligent IP-video surveillance camera's PTZ functions can be operated remotely with selected mobile phones, e.g., Nokia, Sony Ericsson. For more information, see the link for mobile phones in the Technical Requirements section.
I already have my own IP camera. Can I use it with the OMNIUS system?
The system is highly independent of camera platform. If the camera is in the list of recommended products (see Technical Requirements section) you can easily use it with our system. Otherwise we cannot guarantee full compatibility with our system. If the camera is recommended, you can add it to your list of cameras by entering all the necessary parameters (IP address, password, login). Our company already uses traditional video surveillance. Can we integrate OMNIUS with our company's existing system?
Traditional analogue CCTV systems can easily be adapted for use with OMNIUS. This allows the use of existing video surveillance equipment with the sophisticated advantages of OMNIUS (e.g., greater security, ease of administration, quality/durability of recordings, mobility)
